Why “Bujji & Bhairava” Misses the Mark as a Prelude to the 600Cr Blockbuster “Kalki 2898 AD”

Before diving into the details and heartbreak of the “Bujji & Bhairava” series, it’s essential to recognize that in 2024, there is a clear distinction between cartoons, animation, and anime. Unfortunately, this animated series, intended as a prelude to the massive-budget film “Kalki 2898 AD,” fails to deliver the expected grandeur and coherence.

Character Design Flaws

One of the major disappointments is the character design. The series struggles to capture the essence of its anchor, Prabhas. The design is so vague that it could easily be mistaken for an original character rather than representing Prabhas. Similarly, Brahmanandam’s character, despite some signature traits, fails to resemble the beloved actor, diminishing the connection for the audience.

Episode One Review

The first episode introduces Bujji (BU-JZ 1) in a lackluster manner, with the nickname feeling like a lazy effort. Bujji, on her 100th mission, loses her ship and ends up in a dump yard. Meanwhile, Bhairava, portrayed as a bounty hunter with a personality reminiscent of Puri Jagannadh’s characters, is introduced in a bar scene. This setting, along with digital transactions replacing traditional currency, attempts to establish the futuristic world of the series.

Bhairava’s quest to capture his bounty to gain access to “the complex” (reminiscent of Alita’s Sky City) is visually engaging but lacks depth. The narrative jumps to a point where Bhairava meets Bujji in a dump yard, setting up their partnership.

Episode Two Review

In the second episode, Bhairava and Bujji’s partnership is formed as they gather parts to build a vehicle. Despite the initial promise of constructing it with existing parts, Bhairava resorts to begging, borrowing, and stealing to complete the task. The character Musali, voiced by Brahmanandam, adds some humor but fails to impress due to inconsistent voice acting.

The episode ends with Bujji attempting to double-cross Bhairava, only to be pulled back by an override code. They eventually agree to work together, setting the stage for the movie “Kalki 2898 AD.”

Future Prospects

The series is supposed to lead into the film “Kalki 2898 AD,” with subsequent episodes releasing after the movie. The “Kalki Cinematic Universe” will include this series, the film, its sequel, and potential spin-offs. However, the underwhelming execution of “Bujji & Bhairava” casts doubt on the excitement and anticipation for the film.

Conclusion

“Bujji & Bhairava” doesn’t live up to the expectations of a prelude to a 600Cr budget film. The series fails to capture the essence of its characters and the grandeur of its source material, leaving much to be desired. As we optimistically await the release of “Kalki 2898 AD,” it remains to be seen whether the cinematic universe can redeem itself.
