Farewell to Ramoji Rao: Architect of Indian Media and Entertainment

Ramoji Rao was the founder of Ramoji Film City, world’s largest film production facility Ramoji Film City. He also owned Eenadu newspaper, ETV Network of TV channels and Usha Kiran movies. He was also the chairman of Dolphin Group of Hotels in Andhra Pradesh.

Born on November 16, 1936 as Cherukuri Ramoji Rao in Pedaparupudi of Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. His ventures spanned across film production, financial services, and hospitality.

Known for his significant contributions to the media industry, Rao has been honored with numerous awards. His vision and innovation have made a lasting impact on Indian media and entertainment, establishing him as a pivotal figure in these sectors.

One of Rao’s most ambitious projects was the Ramoji Film City, inaugurated in 1996. Located near Hyderabad, it holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s largest film studio complex, spanning over 1,666 acres.

Ramoji Film City is a one-stop destination for filmmakers, offering state-of-the-art facilities and diverse shooting locations. It has attracted numerous Indian and international film productions, significantly boosting India’s film industry.

In 2016, he received the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in India, from then-President Pranab Mukherjee.

Saddened by Rao’s death Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has tweeted: I am deeply saddened to know that Mr. Ramoji Rao, who was a pioneer of media and pioneered many reforms and values in the field of information, is no more.

Working with commitment, discipline and perseverance.. Ramoji Rao’s demise is a huge loss to the Telugu media sector, TV industry and Telugu states.
