With big tentpole films moving their release dates, Independence Day 2024 has become a prime opportunity for a variety of small to medium-budget films to shine. Here are seven movies that you shouldn’t miss on August 15, 2024.

1. Khel Khel Mein

Akshay Kumar returns to the silver screen with Khel Khel Mein, a comedy film directed by Mudassar Aziz. An official remake of the 2016 Italian film Perfect Strangers, this film is jointly produced by T-Series, Wakaoo Films, and White World Productions. The ensemble cast includes Taapsee Pannu, Fardeen Khan, Vaani Kapoor, and Ammy Virk. Akshay, known for his disciplined approach and multiple releases per year, aims to bounce back after a few underperforming films with this multi-starrer comedy.

This will be Akshay Kumar’s fourth film with Taapsee Pannu since their hit collaboration in Mission Mangal, Baby, and Naam Shabana.

2. Vedaa

John Abraham takes the lead in Vedaa, an action drama inspired by true events. Directed by Nikkhil Advani, the film portrays the bravery of a young woman fighting for justice, guided by John’s character. The film stars Sharvari, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Abhishek Banerjee. John Abraham, who has been making waves with his independent productions and strong antagonist roles, promises a gripping tale of resilience and courage.

This is John Abraham’s second collaboration with Nikkhil Advani after the critically acclaimed Batla House.

3. Stree 2

The much-awaited sequel to the 2018 hit Stree is here. Directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan, Stree 2 stars Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, along with Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Aparshakti Khurana. The film continues the horror-comedy saga, promising more laughs and scares.

Stree 2 is the fourth installment(fifth film, not counting Roohi in continuity) in the Maddock Supernatural Universe, which includes films like Roohi, Bhediya, Munjya.

4. Double iSmart

Directed by Puri Jagannadh, Double iSmart stars Ram Pothineni and Sanjay Dutt in a sci-fi action thriller. This Telugu film, a sequel to iSmart Shankar, combines high-octane action with an intriguing storyline, set to captivate audiences across multiple languages.

Sanjay Dutt joins the Telugu film industry with this project, marking his first major role in a South Indian film.

5. Mr. Bachchan

Ravi Teja channels his admiration for Amitabh Bachchan in Mr. Bachchan, directed by Harish Shankar. This film, based on a real-life income tax raid, is a significant release for Ravi Teja following his previous film Eagle. The film is produced by People Media Factory.

Ravi Teja’s look in the film is inspired by Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic style from the 1970s and 1980s.

6. Andhagan

Thiagarajan’s Tamil remake of Andhadhun stars Prashanth, Simran, and Priya Anand. Despite production delays, Andhagan promises a gripping crime thriller experience, following the tale of a blind pianist caught in a murder conspiracy.

The film faced numerous directorial changes and pandemic-related delays before Thiagarajan himself took over the project.

7. Thangalaan

Vikram stars in Thangalaan, a historical fantasy action film directed by Pa. Ranjith. Set during the British Raj, the film depicts a tribal leader’s fight against an apparent sorceress. The film is shot in both 2D and 3D formats, adding a visual treat to the storytelling.

This is Vikram’s 61st film, and it was initially announced under the tentative title Chiyaan 61.
