A family-authorized biopic of George Floyd titled “Daddy Changed the World” is currently in development, with his daughter Gianna Floyd and her mother, Roxie Washington, serving as executive producers. This project is a collaboration between Radar Pictures, 8 Queens Film & Media Productions, and Night Fox Entertainment.
Gregory R. Anderson, known for “Stomp the Yard,” is set to write the screenplay. The film will delve into the life of George Floyd, whose tragic death on May 25, 2020, sparked a global movement against police brutality and racial injustice. Ted Field will produce the film for Radar Pictures, alongside Dr. Kaeita Rankin for 8 Queens and Timothy Christian for Night Fox. A director has yet to be chosen.
George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on his neck for over nine minutes, leading to Floyd’s death and a worldwide outcry for justice. Floyd’s desperate cries of “I can’t breathe” became a powerful rallying cry for the racial justice movement. Chauvin was later convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, and sentenced to over 20 years in prison. Three other officers involved were also convicted of violating Floyd’s civil rights.
The biopic aims to portray Floyd not as a flawless individual, but as a loving father with human imperfections. It promises a gritty, dramatic depiction of Floyd and his community during a pivotal moment in history. According to a press release, the film will highlight the essence of Floyd’s life and humanize his story, rather than follow a traditional biopic format.
Roxie Washington expressed her excitement for the project, emphasizing the film’s potential to show the real George Floyd and to support the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. “We are excited the world will see the real, jovial, and loving George we know. This film will humanize him, embody the essence of his life, and hopefully reignite efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It’s time for justice and equality for all,” she stated.
Timothy Christian from Night Fox Entertainment emphasized the importance of telling Floyd’s story, calling his killing a “tragic, shameful moment in our nation’s history.” Dr. Kaeita Rankin also voiced her commitment to using her platform to inspire change and honor Floyd’s legacy through this film.
