Marvel Studios is abuzz with rumors about the next installment of the Thor franchise. Thor 5 is set to begin production in Q3 of 2025, and there’s speculation that it might be the last chapter in the epic saga. Kenneth Branagh, who directed the first Thor film, is reportedly the studio’s top choice to helm this pivotal movie. If Branagh doesn’t sign on, Eternals director Chloe Zhao and Rogue One’s Gareth Edwards are strong contenders.
Kenneth Branagh first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2008, bringing a “human story right in the center of a big epic scenario.” His unique vision helped establish Thor as a key character in the MCU. Chris Hemsworth, after a rigorous audition process that saw his brother Liam also vying for the role, ultimately became synonymous with the God of Thunder. Hemsworth’s transformation for the role was notable; he gained 20 pounds by eating non-stop and lifted weights for the first time.
Taika Waititi, who rejuvenated the Thor series with his comedic touch in Ragnarok and Love and Thunder, won’t be returning for Thor 5. Waititi expressed his openness to direct another Thor film if Hemsworth was involved, envisioning a low-budget road trip film without fight scenes, reminiscent of the film Nebraska. Hemsworth, on the other hand, has hinted at wanting a “drastically different tone” for a potential final installment to ensure it feels fresh and unpredictable.
Waititi noted that any future Thor film would need to feature a villain more powerful than Hela and continue the character’s evolution in a fun way. Despite informal talks about Thor’s future, Waititi confirmed in November 2023 that he would not be involved in Thor 5.
As Marvel Studios looks to potentially close the book on Thor, the involvement of Kenneth Branagh could bring a full-circle moment to the franchise. The inclusion of the Thor Corps promises a grand and fitting farewell to the beloved hero.
