Imtiaz Ali’s “Rockstar,” a film that revolutionized the portrayal of music in Indian cinema, has made a triumphant return to theatres, rekindling its legacy among cinephiles. Starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, the movie has garnered cult status over the years and continues to be a topic of discussion across various platforms and film clubs. A decade after its original release, “Rockstar” has once again hit the big screen, drawing in large crowds of movie enthusiasts.
Initially, the film’s re-release was a token screening in select cinema halls, but it quickly gained momentum. According to a report in Pinkvilla, the re-release has raked in over Rs 1 crore at the box office. The growing demand for the film led theatres to extend its run to two weeks, during which it earned around Rs 1.10 crore in India. The impressive turnout, despite the limited release, highlights the film’s enduring appeal.
Exhibitors kept ticket prices affordable, which attracted over 1 lakh viewers. Approximately 1.10 lakh tickets were sold during the two-week period. Due to the overwhelming response, “Rockstar” is now set for a third week of screenings, with expectations of continued success through the weekend. Presently, the film is showing exclusively at PVRInox properties.
When “Rockstar” was first released, it coincided with the releases of Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s “Tamasha” and Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor’s “Jab We Met.” Despite this competition, “Rockstar” managed to outperform both films at the box office. In celebration of Cinema Lovers Day, other cult favorites like “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and the recently released “Animal” are also making their way back to theatres.
“Rockstar” is renowned for its compelling screenplay, poignant dialogues, and unforgettable songs like “Nadaan Parinde” and “Kun Faya Kun.” The film beautifully blends romance and tragedy, following the journey of Janardan Jhakar, aka Jordan, a college boy who transforms into an international rock sensation after experiencing heartbreak. Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Jordan earned him the Best Actor Award and significantly altered his career trajectory, solidifying his reputation as a versatile actor with immense potential. Nargis Fakhri stars as Heer Kaul, and the legendary Shammi Kapoor plays Ustad Jameel Khan.
The re-release of “Rockstar” not only serves as a nostalgic trip for longtime fans but also introduces the film to a new generation, ensuring that its legacy continues to inspire and entertain.
