Netflix has announced the return of “Squid Game” for its second season on December 26, 2024, with a third and final season slated for 2025.
Netflix has set both a return date and an end date for its most-watched series, “Squid Game.” The highly anticipated second season will premiere on December 26, 2024, just in time for the post-Christmas streaming surge. Fans won’t have to wait long for the conclusion, as the third and final season is scheduled for 2025.
Season two arrives more than three years after “Squid Game” took the world by storm in 2021. The series has set records on Netflix, holding the top spot in views with 265.2 million and total watch time with 2.2 billion hours within its first 13 weeks of release.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared his thoughts in a letter about the series’ future: “Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who vowed revenge at the end of season one, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale in season three, which will be brought to you next year.”
The returning cast includes Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo. New additions to the ensemble are Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an.
Earlier this year, Netflix provided a glimpse of Season 2 in a sizzle reel and confirmed its return for the latter half of 2024. Between seasons, fans were treated to “Squid Game: The Challenge,” a reality competition based on the show, which will also return for a second season.
Hwang expressed his enthusiasm for the series’ continuation and conclusion: “I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story. We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you’re excited for what’s to come.”
Both Lee Jung-jae and Hwang Dong-hyuk received Emmys for their work on the first season, with Hwang continuing as executive producer alongside Kim Ji-yeon.
